It was made by Leonardo da Vinci around the year 1490. Leonardo was a great artist and a scientist. He wanted to show the perfect shapes of the human body.

He used pen and ink on paper. He also used a tool called a compass to draw circles. The drawing shows a man in two poses at once. In one pose, his arms and legs are spread wide. He fits inside a circle. In the other pose, his arms are out to the sides. He fits inside a square. This shows how the body relates to math and shapes.

Leonardo was inspired by a Roman writer named Vitruvius. Vitruvius wrote about how the body should look. Leonardo used his own studies to make the drawing even better. He even fixed some old mistakes about body parts.

The drawing is very old and fragile. It stays in a museum in Venice, Italy. Because light can hurt the paper, it is rarely shown to people. It is kept in a locked room to stay safe. People still see it as a symbol of art and science working together.
