A stencil is a clever tool used to create patterns or images.

It works by using a thin sheet of material like paper, plastic, wood, or metal. This sheet has specific shapes or letters cut out of it. When you apply pigment, such as paint, through these holes, the design appears on the surface below. The stencil can be the object itself or the resulting image. One big advantage is that stencils are meant to be reused. You can produce the same design many times very quickly.

To make a stencil work well, it must stay in one piece. Artists often use bridges to keep the stencil strong. Bridges are narrow sections of material that are not cut out. They connect the middle parts, called islands, to the rest of the sheet. Without these bridges, the pieces inside the holes would fall out. Some people use spray paint around an object to make a negative image. This is called aerography. It is a way to create a shape by painting the space around it instead.

People have used this method for a very long time. Some hand stencils found in caves are at least 39,900 years old.

Long ago, people used hollow bones to blow pigment around their hands. This created handprint outlines on cave walls. Later, stenciling became a way to color cloth. In Japan, the Katazome technique used stencils to decorate silk during the Edo period.

In Europe, stencils were common for coloring black and white prints around the year 1450. They were also used to color playing cards.

Stencilling is used in many different ways today. The military uses stencils to label equipment, vehicles, and even helmets. During World War Two, USA Airborne soldiers used them to mark playing card designs on helmets.

Street artists also love stencils because they are fast and easy to use. This is helpful for artists who want to make art quickly in public places. Some artists use many layers of different colors to make a detailed image. Famous artists like Banksy use this style of stencil art.

You might even see stencils in your own home. Many people use them for DIY projects to decorate walls or ceilings. You can buy stencil templates at hardware or craft stores. These are often made of flexible plastics like vinyl or mylar. They can be used with a brush, a roller, or even a sponge. Stencils are also used in very tiny ways in science. Scientists use micro-stencils to work with very small things called nanotechnology. Whether for art or science, stencils help us make patterns with ease.
