The history of projection is deeply tied to the camera obscura. This is a natural optical phenomenon. It occurs when light from a scene passes through a small hole in a screen. This light forms an inverted image on the opposite surface. The image appears both upside down and flipped from left to right. The Chinese philosopher Mozi described this principle around 470 to 391 BC. He correctly noted that the image is inverted because light travels in straight lines.

In the early 11th century, the Arab physicist Ibn al-Haytham studied this effect. He conducted experiments with light in darkened rooms. He discovered that a smaller hole results in a sharper image. Another ancient method involved Chinese magic mirrors from the Han dynasty, which lasted from 206 BC to 24 AD. These bronze mirrors had patterns embossed on the back. When light reflected from the polished front, the pattern appeared on a wall. This happened because minute undulations on the surface directed the light rays.

Another fascinating historical device is the revolving lantern. In China, these were known as "trotting horse lamps" before 1000 CE. These lanterns used a paper vane impeller to spin a shaft. The impeller was turned by heated air rising from a lamp. This motion caused cut-out silhouettes to project onto the lantern's paper sides. These images, often of horses, appeared to chase one another. In France, similar devices were called "lanterne vive" during medieval times.

Many famous figures explored the science of light and projection. Around 1420, the engineer Giovanni Fontana drew a lantern projecting a demon. In 1515, Leonardo da Vinci made a sketch of a projecting lantern. This design included a candle, a chimney, and a condensing lens. Later, in 1608, Cornelis Drebbel used a projector for magical performances. He described summoning apparitions, such as giants that moved lifelike limbs. These early experiments paved the way for the complex digital systems we use today.
