A rangefinder is a tool inside a camera. It helps you take sharp photos.

Most rangefinders show two images of the same thing. One image moves when you turn a wheel. When the two images line up and look like one, the object is in focus.

These cameras were very popular from the 1930s to the 1970s. Many famous brands made them. Leica is one of the most well-known names. Other makers include Nikon and Canon.

Rangefinder cameras have some special traits. They are often small and quiet. This makes them good for street photography. Because they do not have a mirror inside, the lenses can be small too. This helps keep the whole camera compact.

However, they have some limits. The window you look through is not in the same spot as the lens. This can cause a small error called parallax. This error happens when you take a photo of something very close. Some modern digital cameras now use autofocus to find distance instead.
