Abstract art is a special way to make art. It uses shapes, colors, and lines. It does not always look like real things from our world. Some art is only a little abstract. An artist might change the color of a tree. This is called partial abstraction. Other art is totally abstract. It has no trace of real things. You might only see circles or squares.

Many artists helped start this new way. In the 1800s, art changed a lot. Artists like James McNeill Whistler focused on how things felt to see.

Others used bold colors to show deep feelings. This was called Expressionism. Some artists used shapes like cubes or spheres. This helped lead to a style called Cubism.

In the early 1900s, many new ideas grew. Some artists used lines like rays of light. Others used rectangles of color. Piet Mondrian made art with lines and colors.
