Basic research

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some people study the world just to learn. They want to understand how nature works. This is called basic research. It is also called pure science. Scientists do this work because they are curious. They want to find new ideas and truths.

Basic research helps us make new theories. A theory is an idea that explains how things happen. This work is the start of most new ideas. For example, math research from a long time ago helped make computers.

Other people use these ideas to build tools. This is called applied science. Applied science uses theories to make new technology. One example is a fast train. Its design was helped by looking at a bird's beak.

Basic research and applied science work together. Basic research often happens at universities. About 76% of this work is done there. This work can take a long time. Many new tools come from research done 20 or 30 years before.
