Students first earn an undergraduate degree, which is often called a bachelor's degree. After that, they can pursue even higher levels of study. These studies lead to special qualifications like master's degrees or doctorates. Some people also earn certificates or diplomas to help them in their jobs. In North America, people usually call this "graduate school." In other English-speaking places, it is often called "postgraduate" study.

There are different ways these studies work depending on the goal. Some students go to graduate schools to study subjects like science or history. These students often do original research to find new things. They must write a long paper called a thesis or a dissertation. This paper is checked by other experts to make sure it is correct. Other students go to professional schools to learn specific jobs. These schools prepare people to be doctors, lawyers, or architects.

This way of learning has a very long history. The idea of moving from one level to another started a long time ago. The word "degree" comes from Latin words meaning to move from one stage to another. This concept grew from medieval universities in Europe, especially in Italy. In those early days, university studies could take a very long time. A student might spend six years on a bachelor's degree. They could then spend twelve more years working toward a master's or a doctorate.

Different degrees have different names and rules. A master's degree is a common next step after college. There are many types, such as a Master of Arts or a Master of Science. In the UK, some master's degrees take one year of study. In other places, like Finland or Sweden, there is a degree called a Licentiate. This is more advanced than a master's but not quite a doctorate. A doctorate is often the highest degree a person can earn. It is a "terminal degree," which means it is the final level of study in many fields.

Learning at this level helps people join special groups of experts. The word "doctor" comes from a Latin word that means "to teach." This is because these degrees once gave people the right to teach others. Some universities even give "honorary degrees" to people for their great work. These are given to artists, writers, or politicians to honor them. Even though it is different from college, many teachers help both types of students. It is a way for people to turn their interests into lifelong careers.
