Course (education)

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A course is a unit of teaching in higher education. It usually covers one specific subject. A teacher or professor leads the class for a group of students. These classes often follow a fixed schedule every week. Most courses last for one academic term. After finishing, students might earn a grade or academic credit.

There are many different ways to learn in a course. In a lecture, the teacher talks while students listen. A seminar is different because students present their own work for discussion. Some students do independent study to learn about a special topic. They must get approval from a department chair for this. Other students work in a laboratory for science courses.

Students do many tasks to succeed in their studies. They attend sessions and read books from a syllabus. They might write long papers or do homework. Some courses require laboratory exercises or quizzes. In many places, grades come from all this work. This is different from some European universities. There, a final exam often decides the grade.

Some courses are required, while others are electives. Required courses are essential to earn a degree. Electives are choices that a student picks themselves. These often focus on more specialized topics. At the University of British Columbia, students might pick electives about China or Japan. Medical students might even take electives in other countries. This helps them learn about different cultures.

In the United States, schools use a numbering system. This started in the 1920s to help students move between colleges. A course might be called "French 213." The first number usually shows the level of difficulty. A "101" course is often for beginners. The University of Buffalo first used "101" in 1929. This number became a common way to describe basic knowledge.
