These schools are often called trade schools or technical schools. Some students attend these schools during high school. Other students go to them after they finish high school. These schools focus on teaching practical skills for a certain task. This is different from academic high schools. Academic schools usually prepare students for more college study. Vocational schools prepare students to enter the workforce directly.

Learning at a vocational school works in different ways. In some places, students learn one trade for a long time. In others, they might study a mix of subjects. Some schools use a system called an apprenticeship. This means students learn a job while they are working. In Canada, many students go to community colleges for this. They might study health sciences or technology. Some students even take classes online now. This helps adults who are already working to learn new skills.

Many different types of schools have existed throughout history. In the United States, some early vocational schools became famous universities. For example, the California Institute of Technology is one such school. In Canada, the term "vocational school" began to change in the 1960s. Provinces moved toward schools that offered both academic and trade tracks. This change helped give students more choices after they graduated. In the former Soviet Union, schools called PTUs were used for apprenticeships. These names changed many times as the education systems grew.

Different countries use many specific names for these schools. In Australia, many students use a system called TAFE. There are also trade colleges in places like Brisbane and Perth. In Greece, these are called Vocational Lyceums. Students there can study nursing or graphic design. In Finland, about 47 percent of 16-year-olds choose this path. They might study IT or how to work in a forest.

In Canada, the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology was founded in 1916. It is the first public technical institute in that country.

These schools connect learning to the real world. Instead of just reading books, students use their hands. They might practice woodworking, cooking, or fixing cars.

In the United States, some students do "dual enrollment." This means they earn a high school diploma and a certificate at once. In Europe, some students study for six years to get a special degree. Whether it is in a classroom or a workshop, these schools help people build careers. They turn interests into real skills for the future.
