Some schools have two different levels. The first level is called lower secondary education. Students here are usually between 11 and 15 years old. They study many different subjects. The second level is upper secondary education. This is the final stage of formal school for most. Students are usually 15 to 18 years old. They learn skills for jobs or for university.

Every country has its own way of organizing these schools. In the United States, many kids go to a middle school first. Middle schools often serve grades 6 through 8. Then students move to a high school for grades 9 through 12. In South Africa, there is no middle school at all. Students go straight from primary school to high school from grade 8 to 12. In Australia and Hong Kong, kids move to secondary school at age 12. In the United Kingdom, many students stay in school until they are 16 or 18.

Building a school is a big job. A school needs many special rooms. A regular classroom for 30 students needs about 55 square meters. Art rooms need to be even larger, around 83 square meters. Science labs for 30 students need about 90 square meters. Schools also need libraries, computer rooms, and canteens for food. In the United Kingdom, the government has rules for how much space a school must have. These rules help make sure every student has a good place to learn.

People often talk about how big a school should be. Some think small schools are better for students. Small schools can help everyone feel like a community. Research says academic success is good when there are 150 to 250 students in a grade. Large schools can be good too. They can offer many different types of classes and clubs. They can also save money on things like basketball courts. However, large schools can sometimes feel more crowded or busy.
