Some schools have two parts. The first part is lower secondary. Students there are usually 11 to 15 years old. The second part is upper secondary. Students there are usually 15 to 18 years old. In the United States, many kids go to a middle school first. Then they go to a high school. In South Africa, there is no middle school. Students go straight from primary school to high school.

Schools look different in every country. In the United Kingdom, some students stay until they are 18. In many rich countries, kids must go to school until they are 16.
