Secondary education comes after primary school. It prepares students for work or higher learning.

Most students start this stage around age 12. Many countries say school is required until age 16. Some places even require it until age 20. Since 1989, education has been a basic human right. This means every child should have access to it.

In the past, schools were very different. Long ago, the church ran most schools. They mostly taught boys. These boys often became priests or leaders. As trade grew, schools began to teach more. Students needed to learn math and science for jobs.

Later, the state began to take control. New ideas changed how children learned. Instead of just repeating old texts, they built new knowledge. During the Industrial Revolution, more people needed to learn. Factories needed workers who could read and write. Today, many countries offer free school for all young people. This helps them grow and think for themselves.
