This can happen at a school or at home. Most countries have these laws today.

In the past, some groups had their own rules. In Sparta, boys went to military school. In Judea, teachers called Rabbis helped kids learn. The Aztec Triple Alliance was one of the first states to use a system for all kids.

Later, new ideas changed how schools worked. In the 1500s, Martin Luther wanted kids to read the Bible. This led to more schools in Europe. In the 1600s, Scotland became the first country with national laws for school. In the United States, the Plymouth Colony made parents teach reading and writing.

By the 1700s, Prussia made a modern system. They taught kids reading, writing, and singing. This model spread to many other lands. In France, new laws made school free for all kids. In the U.S., Massachusetts was the first state to pass such a law in 1852. By 1918, every state had these laws.
