These are schools run by a government. The government pays for them using money from taxation. This means the money comes from the people living in that area. These schools provide education for children from ages 4 to 18. They help make sure many students can learn and grow. There are many other ways to learn, like homeschooling or private schools.

In Canada, each province is in charge of its own schools. Most children there go to school until they are sixteen years old. In Ontario and New Brunswick, they stay until they are eighteen. In South Africa, these are officially called public schools. The law there separates public schools from independent schools. Some independent schools get a little help from the state if they have low fees.
