The ancient Celts had a very special way of seeing the world. They practiced a religion known as Celtic paganism. This was a polytheistic faith, which means they believed in many different gods and goddesses.

Some of these gods were only loved by one small tribe. Other gods were known by many people across large areas. Many Celts were also animists. This means they believed that every part of nature had a spirit. They felt a deep connection to the world around them.

People did many things to show their faith. They often held special ceremonies in sacred groves. These natural places were called nemetons.

Some groups also built temples or ritual enclosures. People made offerings to their gods to show respect. They might leave gifts in water, wetlands, or deep wells.

There is also evidence that they sacrificed animals like livestock. Some ancient writers even claimed they sacrificed humans in large wicker structures.

We do not have books written by the Celts themselves. This makes learning about them a bit like a puzzle.

Instead, we use things found in the ground. Archaeologists study old art, coins, and stone carvings. They also read stories written by Greek and Roman scholars. However, those writers were sometimes biased. They often thought of the Celts as barbarians. This means their stories might not always be fair or true.

Many famous names belong to Celtic gods.

Taranis was a god linked to thunder and the bull. Epona was a goddess of horses. Lugus was a god of skill and craft. Some gods were seen in threes, like the Three Mothers.

There were also healing gods linked to sacred springs. Even the god Cernunnos is often shown with antlers. These names help us see the many faces of their faith.

Celtic beliefs changed as time went on. When the Romans conquered lands like Gaul, the religions mixed together. This created a new way of worship called Gallo-Roman religion. Eventually, most people in these areas became Christians. In places like Britain, Anglo-Saxon beliefs also moved in.

Even so, Celtic ideas left a big mark on history. Today, some people practice neopaganism to honor these old traditions. They find wonder in the ancient myths and symbols.
