Hestia was the first child of Rhea and Cronus. Her father swallowed her and her siblings when they were born. Later, Zeus helped them all escape. Hestia became one of the twelve main Olympian gods. She chose to never marry. She stayed a virgin goddess to tend the fires of Olympus.

Many people gave Hestia gifts. They gave her the first part of every sacrifice. This showed respect for the family and the home. In cities, a public fire was also hers. When people started a new town, they took a flame from the old city. This kept the new town linked to the old one. The Romans had a similar goddess named Vesta. She also looked after the home and the community.
