A fairy tale is a short story filled with magic and wonder.

These stories belong to a group of tales called folklore. They often feature enchantments and mythical beings like dragons, giants, or elves. You might also meet talking animals, witches, or even mermaids.

Some people call them "wonder tales." This is a German word, märchen, which means a "little story." These tales are special because they usually take place "once upon a time." This means they do not happen in a real place or a real time. Instead, they exist in a world of magic and possibility.

Fairy tales work in different ways to capture our imagination. Many began as oral stories, which means people told them out loud. They were passed down from one person to another for many generations. Later, people began to write them down as literary fairy tales.

These written stories can be quite short and quick to read. Some scholars look at the plots to understand how they work. For example, Vladimir Propp studied the specific parts of a story's journey. Other experts, like Steven Swann Jones, say magic is what makes them unique. Others believe that "transformation," or things changing shape, is the most important part.

Tracing the history of these stories is a very hard job. This is because many of the oldest stories were never written down. Researchers at universities in Durham and Lisbon believe these tales are very old. Some might even date back thousands of years to the Bronze Age.

In ancient times, people in many different cultures told their own versions. There are very old collections like the Panchatantra from India. In China, there are famous collections of wonder tales from the 14th century. These ancient roots show that humans have always loved sharing magical stories.

Many famous names helped shape the fairy tales we know today. In the late 17th century, Madame d'Aulnoy used the term "conte de fées." This is the French way to say fairy tale. Later, writers like Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm collected many stories.

The Brothers Grimm tried to keep the feeling of the original oral tales. In the 16th and 17th centuries, writers like Giovanni Francesco Straparola also wrote them. Even famous authors like J.R.R. Tolkien wrote about magical lands filled with dwarves and elves. These different writers helped the tradition grow and change over time.

Fairy tales are connected to many other kinds of stories. They are different from legends, which people often believe are true. They are also different from fables, which are stories that teach a lesson.

Sometimes, people use the term "fairy tale" to describe a very happy ending. You might hear someone call a romance a "fairy-tale romance." We even use the term to describe stories that are far-fetched or impossible. Even though they are different, fairy tales share a deep link with all human storytelling. They help us explore ideas through the lens of magic and adventure.
