A fairy tale is a short story belonging to the folklore genre. These narratives typically feature magic, enchantments, and various mythical or fanciful beings.

Common elements include dragons, dwarfs, elves, fairies, giants, gnomes, goblins, griffins, merfolk, monsters, pixies, talking animals, trolls, unicorns, witches, wizards, and woodwoses. While the term is often used colloquially to describe something impossible or a "fairy-tale ending" of unusual happiness, it refers to a specific literary tradition. In technical contexts, scholars distinguish these from legends, which involve belief in the veracity of events. They also differ from beast fables, which are explicit moral tales. Unlike epics, fairy tales usually contain only superficial references to religion, actual places, or real people. Instead, they inhabit a timeless setting, often beginning with "once upon a time."

Scholars use different methods to understand how these stories function. Some folklorists prefer the German term *Märchen*, or "wonder tale." This term suggests a "little story" from a time when the world was still magic.

Vladimir Propp performed a morphological analysis to study their plot elements. He looked at the specific structures that make up a tale. However, Propp was criticized because his analysis did not easily apply to stories without a quest. Other experts, such as Steven Swann Jones, argue that magic is the primary differentiator. Davidson and Chaudri suggest that "transformation," or the changing of forms, is the key feature.

Even the writer Italo Calvino noted their "quickness," meaning the economy and concision of the writing style.

Fairy tales exist in two main forms: oral and literary. Oral tales are spoken or enacted dramatically and passed down through generations.

Literary fairy tales, or *contes de fées*, are versions written down by authors. These two forms have always exchanged plots, motifs, and elements. In the 17th century, literary fairy tales became fashionable among aristocratic women as a parlor game. This social activity actually helped to maintain the older oral traditions. While some 18th-century folklorists tried to find "pure" oral tales, most literary versions draw from folk traditions. This makes it very difficult to trace exactly how a specific story moved from one person to another.

The history of the genre is difficult to trace because often only literary forms survive. However, researchers at universities in Durham and Lisbon suggest these stories may be thousands of years old. Some roots may even reach back to the Bronze Age.

Early written examples appear in diverse cultures. The *Panchatantra* from India dates to the 3rd century BC. In China, the 14th-century collection *Jiandeng Xinhua* is a highly influential work of wonder tales. In ancient Greece, the 6th-century BC fables of Aesop are considered early predecessors. Even Roman literature, such as *The Golden Ass* from 100–200 AD, contains elements of these magical narratives.

Specific historical figures helped stabilize the genre in the West. During the Renaissance, writers like Giovanni Francesco Straparola and Giambattista Basile began marking these stories as a distinct type of literature. In the late 17th century, Madame d'Aulnoy coined the term *conte de fées*, which translates to "fairy tale" in English.

Later, collectors like Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm brought the genre to a wider audience. The Brothers Grimm specifically attempted to preserve the characteristics of oral tales, though their printed versions were often reworked for readers. This evolution helped the term "fairy tale" eventually eclipse the more general term "folk tale."

Fairy tales are closely connected to the modern genre of fantasy. Before "fantasy" was a defined category, many famous works were called fairy tales. This included L. Frank Baum's *The Wonderful Wizard of Oz* and J.R.R. Tolkien's *The Hobbit*.

Tolkien's essay "On Fairy-Stories" is a vital piece of fantasy criticism that discusses world-building. While modern fantasy draws heavily on fairy tale motifs, such as elves and dwarves, the two are now viewed as distinct genres. The fairy tale remains a foundational element that informs how modern writers build magical worlds.

Today, the influence of the fairy tale remains visible in many areas of culture. The term is still used to describe romances or stories that seem too good to be true. Because these stories use archetypal characters—like princesses, youngest sons, or wicked stepmothers—they remain easy for people to recognize.
