People enjoy it for its deep stories and smart ideas. It has won 22 National Magazine Awards for its work. Many readers who attend college look to it for news and art. It remains a major part of American media today.

The magazine has many different sections to read. One popular part is the "Harper's Index." This section uses statistics from current events to show how the world is changing. There are also sections called "Readings" and "Annotation." The magazine also offers a newsletter called the "Weekly Review." This newsletter gives a short summary of news about science and politics. These parts help readers see the world through facts and stories.

This magazine has a very long history. It began in New York City in June 1850. It was first called "Harper's New Monthly Magazine." The founders were Harper & Brothers.

In the beginning, the first run had 7,500 copies. These sold out almost right away. Only six months later, 50,000 people were reading it. This shows how much people loved it from the start.

Many important people have shared their writing in its pages. The magazine published parts of the novel Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. It also featured work from Winston Churchill and Woodrow Wilson. In the 1970s, it published important reporting by Seymour Hersh. The magazine has faced many changes and leaders over the years. In 1980, a foundation was created to keep the magazine running. This foundation was started by Rick and Roderick MacArthur.

Harper's Magazine is part of a larger world of publishing. It is related to Harper's Bazaar, which focuses on fashion. While they share a name, each magazine is made independently. The original publishing house eventually became HarperCollins. Today, the magazine also uses blogs to reach people online. It continues to be a place where writers share big ideas. It connects the history of the 1800s to our world today.
