It started a long time ago as a newspaper. People often called it a "rock inkie." This name described its style of writing and news. Today, it exists as a website and a magazine. It helps people discover new things to listen to or watch. People value it because it has been a guide for music fans for many years.

To make its famous music charts, NME used a special way of working. On November 14, 1952, it created the first UK Singles Chart. This was a list of the top twelve best-selling songs. Instead of using big computer systems, the staff looked at sales in regional stores. They gathered this information from all around the United Kingdom. The very first number one song on this list was "Here in My Heart" by Al Martino. This helped everyone know which songs were the most popular.

NME has a very long and busy history. A man named Maurice Kinn bought the paper in 1952. He paid 1,000 pounds for it just 15 minutes before it was supposed to close. Under an editor named Ray Sonin, the paper grew very fast. In the 1960s, it was very popular with fans of pop music. During this time, it reached a peak of 306,881 copies in 1964. This happened when the Beatles were very famous around the world.

There are many important moments and names in its story. In the 1970s, writers like Julie Burchill and Tony Parsons helped make punk rock famous. They wrote about rebellious bands like the Sex Pistols.

In the 1980s, NME released special music tapes called C81 and C86. These tapes featured many new bands like Aztec Camera and Orange Juice. In 2006, the NME website had 1.6 million users from all over the world. Even in 2016, it reached a record 307,217 copies per week.

NME connects to the way we enjoy culture today. It has changed from paper to digital screens many times. In 1996, it launched its website to reach people online. Later, a company called BandLab Technologies bought it in 2019. Now, the brand covers much more than just music. It includes gaming and film news too. This shows how much the world of entertainment has grown over the years.
