It shares news, videos, and reviews about the music world. People love it because it tracks what is popular through special music charts. These lists rank the best singles and albums. They use data from radio airplay, sales, and streaming. Some of its most famous lists are the Hot 100 and the Billboard 200.

By tracking these numbers, the magazine helps show which artists are the biggest stars.

In the beginning, the magazine did not focus on music at all. It was started on November 1, 1894, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Two men named William Donaldson and James Hennegan created it. At first, it was called Billboard Advertising. It helped people who put up paper posters in public spaces. The very first issues were only eight pages long. It even had a section for agricultural fairs by 1896. Later, it covered many fun things like circuses, carnivals, and traveling shows.

As new technology arrived, the magazine changed its focus. Tools like the phonograph and the radio became very common. These machines changed how people listened to music. Billboard began to cover these "marvels of modern technology" to keep up. In 1936, it published its first music hit parade. By 1939, it added a Record Buying Guide. In 1940, it started the Chart Line to track best-selling records. This helped the magazine become a specialist in the music industry.

Billboard has had many different owners over its long history. After Donaldson died in 1925, his family owned it for a while. They sold the magazine to private investors in 1985 for about $40 million. Later, it was sold to a company called Affiliated Publications for $100 million in 1987. In 1994, a Dutch company called VNU bought it for $220 million. Many different groups have owned it since then. Today, it is part of the Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group.

Even though the world has changed, Billboard keeps finding new ways to work. In the 1990s, it used new technology to make its charts more accurate. Instead of just guessing, it used scanners at store checkouts. This data came from a system called Nielsen SoundScan. This helped the magazine stay a leader in music news. Even when the music industry faced hard times, Billboard kept growing. It remains a very important name for anyone who loves music.
