The magazine has a very long history. It was started in 1894 by William Donaldson and James Hennegan. At first, it was called Billboard Advertising. It helped people who put up paper ads in public. Later, it covered circuses, fairs, and traveling shows.

As technology changed, the magazine changed too. New tools like the phonograph and radio became common. Billboard began to focus more on music. In 1936, it published its first music hit parade. By the 1990s, it was a leader in music news. It even used new ways to track hits. These ways used scanners at store checkouts to see what people bought. Today, it remains a big name in the music industry.
