Super Sentai

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Super Sentai is a famous group of Japanese shows about hero teams.

These shows use a style called tokusatsu. This means they use real actors and bright special effects. Most stories follow a team of people who protect the Earth. They use tools on their hands or wrists to change. This helps them gain superpowers and colorful uniforms. They also use special weapons to fight bad villains.

Each episode usually follows a fun pattern. First, the heroes stop a plan from a group of villains. They must fight many enemy soldiers and a new monster. Sometimes the monster grows to a huge size. When that happens, the heroes use giant robots called mecha. These robots help them defeat the large monster. Every team lives in its own unique world. Only two teams, Denjiman and Sun Vulcan, share a world.

There is a special tradition called a "roll call." This is when the heroes shout their names and titles. This idea comes from a kabuki play from 1862. A man named Kazutoshi Takahashi first used it in the show Gorenger. He was a stunt coordinator for that very first series. This tradition makes the heroes feel very important. It is a way for them to show their pride.

The series began many years ago with creator Shotaro Ishinomori. He made the first two shows, Gorenger and J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai. Gorenger first aired on April 5, 1975. Toei Company later worked with Marvel Comics on a Spider-Man show. This helped bring giant robots into these types of hero shows. By 1981, a book called Super Sentai Zukan used the name. The name was officially changed to Super Sentai Series in 2000.

Many people around the world know these stories. In North America, they are the source for Power Rangers. The shows have had many seasons over the years. The 49th season is called No.1 Sentai Gozyuger. This series will end in 2026. A new project called Project R.E.D. will start in February 2026. This new show will take the same morning time slot. It will continue the tradition of hero stories on TV.
