These stories appear in TV shows, movies, manga, and anime. Most stories follow a group of motorcycle-riding superheroes. They often have an insect motif, meaning they look like bugs. These heroes fight against supervillains who want to rule the world. These villains are often part of evil organizations. Many of these villains are actually responsible for giving the heroes their powers. This creates a deep story about the struggle between good and evil.

To fight their enemies, most Riders use a special transformation belt. This belt is often called a Henshin belt. The hero uses a special phrase to turn into an enhanced form. They fight monsters, known as kaijin, on a "monster of the week" basis. Each hero has different weapons and special abilities. Most Riders also ride a motorcycle to travel. Some heroes use other vehicles instead. For example, Kamen Rider Drive uses a sports car called Tridoron. Kamen Rider Revice uses a hoverbike. Kamen Rider Gavv uses a candy-themed buggy.

The franchise began in 1971 with the first Kamen Rider series.

An artist named Shotaro Ishinomori created the characters. He worked with a producer to design a hero that looked like a grasshopper. The first hero was a college student named Takeshi Hongo. He was a cyborg, which is a person with machine parts. During filming, the actor Hiroshi Fujioka broke both legs in a stunt. Even so, the creators kept his character in the story. They did not want to destroy the dreams of children.

Kamen Rider has many different eras and styles. The original era is called the Shōwa era. This period included shows like Kamen Rider V3 and Kamen Rider Amazon. Later, the franchise entered the Heisei era. This era began with Kamen Rider Kuuga in the year 2000. Some series have different themes. Kamen Rider Den-O features a time-traveling bullet train called the DenLiner. Kamen Rider Wizard is the first to use magic. Kamen Rider Gaim uses a fruit theme. These different styles keep the stories fresh for fans.

Many of these stories have deep and serious themes. The heroes often feel internal turmoil about using violence to protect people. You can see this in the "tear lines" on their helmets. These lines represent the heavy sacrifices the heroes make. The stories also show that monsters can sometimes be kind to humans. Sometimes, humans can even act more evil than the monsters. This makes the characters feel very complex. Most Riders are "morally grey," meaning they have complicated reasons for fighting. They might even clash with other Riders over their different ideas.
