The word kaiju comes from Japan and means "strange beast." These stories often show huge creatures attacking big cities. Sometimes the monsters fight the military or other creatures. These films mix science fiction with disaster stories. People enjoy them because they are exciting and grand. They can be heroes, villains, or just forces of nature.

Many kaiju movies use a special way of filming. In the Japanese style, actors wear large monster suits. This method is called suitmation. Filmmakers also use scale model sets to make cities look real. This helps the monster look truly enormous. Other stories use mecha, which are giant robots. These robots often fight the giant monsters in big battles. This creates a sense of huge scale and action.

Giant monsters have appeared in stories for a long time. An animated short called The Pet from 1921 showed a monster attacking a city. In 1925, the film The Lost World showed dinosaurs in London. This film used stop motion to make creatures move. Later, the 1933 movie King Kong became a huge success. King Kong served as a blueprint for many future monster movies. This helped make giant monsters a part of film history.

In the 1950s, the types of monsters began to change. Instead of just old animals, monsters became mutated by radiation. This reflected real fears about nuclear weapons after World War II. The 1954 movie Godzilla was a very important part of this era. It was created by producer Tomoyuki Tanaka and director Ishirō Honda. Godzilla was inspired by King Kong and the fear of atomic bombs. Other famous monsters from this time include Rodan and Mothra.

As time went on, kaiju stories explored even more ideas. During the 1960s, movies showed monsters fighting one another. The film Godzilla Raids Again introduced the first big monster fight. This featured Godzilla battling a creature named Anguirus. Later, the Space Age brought monsters from outer space. King Ghidorah is a famous example of a space dragon. Other studios created new monsters like the turtle Gamera. These stories continue to connect to our ideas about science and mystery.
