The word kaiju comes from Japan. It means "strange beast." These movies show huge creatures. They often attack big cities. Sometimes they fight the military. Other times they fight each other.

Many kaiju stories use science fiction. Some monsters are old animals. They might wake up from ice. Other monsters change because of radiation. This was a big fear after World War II. The famous monster Godzilla started in 1954. He was a way to show fears about nuclear weapons.

Japanese films have a special style. Actors wear large monster suits. They act on sets made of small models. This is called suitmation. People also make movies about mecha. These are giant robots that fight monsters.
