Tokusatsu is a special way of making movies and TV shows in Japan.

It uses many practical special effects to bring stories to life. These effects are real things used on a set. People often use this style for science fiction, superheroes, or fantasy. It can even be used for scary horror stories. This style of media is one of the most popular forms of entertainment in Japan. Even though many people outside Japan may not know every show, some are very famous. For example, the giant monster Godzilla is known all over the world.

There are several clever ways that filmmakers create these amazing worlds. One main method is called suitmation. This is when a person wears a large costume to act like a monster. They use these suits to play giant creatures on screen. Filmmakers also use miniatures, which are small models of cities or buildings. They place the camera in a specific way to make the models look huge. This trick makes the characters seem much larger than they really are. Some shows even use puppets or stop-motion to move their monsters. Some creators even mix live action with animation to add more detail.

The roots of these techniques go back a long time. Early Japanese theater, like kabuki, used action and fight scenes. Other shows used puppetry to create special effects. A filmmaker named Shōzō Makino is often called the founding father of these techniques. He directed movies that inspired other filmmakers to use new technology. Later, Eiji Tsuburaya began to develop his own ideas. He studied the movie King Kong from 1933 to learn more. This helped him create new ways to show giant monsters on screen.

Many famous stories began in the middle of the last century. In 1954, the movie Godzilla changed everything for Japanese cinema. Eiji Tsuburaya and director Ishirō Honda worked together on this huge project. This film started a "Monster Boom" that lasted for many years. Other famous monsters like Gamera and King Ghidorah became very popular too. In 1957, a different kind of show called Super Giant appeared. This started a shift toward masked superheroes instead of just monsters. By 1971, a show called Kamen Rider helped start the "Henshin Boom." This was a time when superhero shows became very big.

Today, you can see how these ideas have spread to other places. Many different types of heroes exist in this world. You might see Kyodai Heroes, who are heroes that can grow very large. There are also mecha, which are stories about giant robots. Some shows, like Super Sentai, mix many different themes together. Even in other countries, people have tried to make similar shows. For example, a show called Voltes V: Legacy was made in 2023. It used special effects that look like the traditional Japanese style. These stories continue to inspire fans and creators everywhere.
