Often, these images are put in a row of boxes called panels. This helps show a sequence of events happening one after another. Artists use different tools to help tell the story. They might use speech balloons to show what characters are saying. They might use captions to let a narrator speak to the reader. Sometimes, they even use onomatopoeia to show a sound effect. Most comics use drawings, but some use photographs instead.

There are many different ways to enjoy comics. Some people read comic strips in newspapers. Others read comic books, which became very popular in the 1930s. In the United States, the superhero genre became famous after Superman appeared in 1938.

Lately, people also read webcomics on the internet. There are also long, bound books called graphic novels. These books allow for much longer and more complex stories. Many people now find these books in libraries and bookstores.

The history of comics is very long and follows many paths. Some scholars look back as far as the Lascaux cave paintings in France. They see sequences of images there that act like early comics. Other old examples include Egyptian hieroglyphs and the Bayeux Tapestry. In Europe, Rodolphe Töpffer made early cartoon strips in the 1820s. Wilhelm Busch also had a big impact with his work in 1865. These early artists helped show how pictures could tell stories.

Different parts of the world grew their own comic traditions. In America, a strip called The Yellow Kid was very famous in the 1890s. In Japan, the history of comics might go back to the 12th century. Modern Japanese comics grew very fast after World War II ended in 1945. An artist named Osamu Tezuka became very popular during this time.

In Europe, the Adventures of Tintin became a famous icon. These different cultures all created unique ways to use art.

Comics have changed how people think about art over time. For a long time, some people thought comics were just for children. They even thought comics were not "serious" art. However, things began to change toward the end of the 20th century. People started to see comics as a respected way to tell stories. In France, people even call comics the "Ninth Art."
