A graphic novel is a special kind of book that tells a story through sequential art. This means the story uses pictures arranged in a row to show what happens.

These books can be made-up stories or even true stories about real life. While some people call them comic books, many see them as something different. A comic book is often a thin magazine that comes out regularly. A graphic novel is usually a longer, standalone book that you can read all at once.

Some people even call them graphic albums, especially in places like Europe.

Making a graphic novel involves many different steps and styles. Artists use drawings, captions, and word balloons to help tell the tale.

Some creators make books that have no words at all, using only pictures to show the action. Others might use collage, which is making art by sticking different pieces together. You might see stories told in a small, hand-held size or in large hardcover books. The goal is to let the reader see the art and the words at the same time. This makes the reading experience feel very alive and moving.

People have been making long stories with pictures for a very long time. One of the oldest examples in America is a book called The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck. A Swiss artist named Rodolphe Töpffer wrote a similar story called Histoire de Mr. Vieux Bois in 1828. This was later translated into English and published in London in 1841. In New York City, a version came out in 1842 using the original printing plates.

These early works helped show that pictures could tell a whole book's worth of story.

In the 1900s, many new types of picture stories began to appear. In 1929, an American artist named Lynd Ward published a book called Gods' Man. During the 1940s, a series called Classics Illustrated helped young readers by turning famous novels into comics. By 1950, some books were even called "picture novels," such as one titled It Rhymes with Lust.

In the 1960s, creators like Gil Kane and Archie Goodwin began making magazine-style comics novels. These different steps helped the graphic novel grow into what it is today.

The term "graphic novel" became famous with the public in the late 1980s. This happened because books like Maus by Art Spiegelman and Watchmen by Alan Moore were very successful.

Before this, people used many different names for these books. Some called them "graphic prose" or "novel-in-pictures." In 2001, bookstores started using the term "graphic novel" as an official category. Now, you can easily find these wonderful stories in almost any library or bookstore.
