Webcomics are stories told through art and words on the internet.

You can find them on websites or mobile apps. They are different from printed comics because anyone with an internet connection can publish them. This freedom allows people to become web cartoonists. Some webcomics are read by only a few friends. Other famous webcomics have over one million readers. They cover many different subjects and styles.

Artists use many unique ways to build their stories. Some use pixel art, which uses small and blocky images.

Others use photo comics, which are called fumetti. These might use real pictures with text on top. Some artists use templates to copy art from other comics. There is also a style called the infinite canvas. Scott McCloud helped start this idea in 1998. It lets art spread out in any direction without limits. In 2004, JunKoo Kim used scrolling on the Webtoon platform. This made the infinite canvas very successful in South Korea.

The history of webcomics began quite a long time ago. Eric Millikin shared his work called Witches and Stitches in 1985. He used a service called CompuServe to do this. This was before the World Wide Web became popular in 1993. In the mid-1990s, more people made comics just for the web. By the year 2000, many creators were making money. They were also being recognized for their great art. In the 2010s, webtoons became very popular in South Korea.

Webcomics can be about almost anything. Some artists use their work to talk about politics or social ideas. In India, young people use webcomics to share ideas about feminism. In China, webcomics are sometimes used to talk about the government. Some themes can be controversial or cause big debates.

For example, Eric Millikin's themes caused some protests. Artist Tristan Farnon also had legal trouble with a parody. Because they are online, artists have a lot of freedom. They do not always have to follow strict rules from book publishers.

Making a living as a web cartoonist can happen in many ways. Some artists sell things like T-shirts or toys to their fans. They might also sell printed books of their stories. Some creators use crowdfunding sites like Patreon to get support. Many webcomics are even turned into animated shows. Famous works like American Born Chinese were even nominated for a National Book Award. Even the Eisner Awards now have a category for digital comics. This shows how much people value these online stories.
