Manhwa

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Manhwa are comics and print cartoons from Korea.

People all over the world now enjoy these stories. Many manhwa stories are even turned into movies or TV shows. The artists who create these works are called manhwa artists. They follow specific formats to tell their tales. You can read manhwa from left to right, just like English books.

Some versions can also be read vertically from top to bottom. This makes the reading experience feel very special.

There is a digital way to read called Webtoons. The name comes from the Korean words for "web" and "cartoon."

Webtoons are designed for scrolling on a screen. This helps show movement or how time passes in a story. While printed manhwa are often black and white, webtoons are usually in color. The art has a very distinct look. Character bodies often look realistic, but their faces may look more like drawings.

Artists also add very detailed clothing and intricate backgrounds.

The history of manhwa is very long and interesting. In 1948, Kim Yong-hwan started the first comic magazine called Manhwa Haengjin. During the Korean war, manhwa was used to boost public morale. By the 1950s and 1960s, many new styles appeared. One style is called sunjeong, which features romance for young women. Another style is myeongnyang, or "happy comics," which are meant to be humorous.

People even visited manhwabang, which were special comic cafes.

In the early 2000s, manhwa moved mostly to the internet. This happened because of an economic collapse in South Korea. The platform LINE Webtoon helped make these stories popular globally. In 2014, the WEBTOON app launched to change how people read.

JunKoo Kim, who started LINE Webtoon, reported huge numbers for the service. By then, it was used in 60 countries. It had 55 million monthly users and 100 billion annual views. This shows how much people love digital comics.

Manhwa has now reached almost every part of the world. In the United States, Sanho Kim was the first manhwa artist to work there. He worked for famous companies like Marvel and DC Comics. Many people enjoy manhwa because it combines different styles and mythologies. Some stories, like "Full House" or "Goong," became very famous TV dramas.

Today, you can read many stories on your phone. This makes Korean culture easy for everyone to share and enjoy.
