These comics can tell many different kinds of stories. You might find tales of romance, fantasy, or historical events. Some artists even draw stories about thrillers, paranormal events, or horror. These stories often use settings and themes from Asian culture. People who draw or write these comics are called manhua artists.

Creating manhua can happen in many different ways. In the past, artists used lithographic printing to make more copies.

Today, many artists make web manhua, which are digital comics. These are often posted on social media or special websites. Some artists use color for every panel in their work. Other artists might make a single issue that looks like a painting. The way people read them can also change. In mainland China, text is read from left-to-right. In Hong Kong and Taiwan, characters are often vertical and read right-to-left.

Chinese storytelling with pictures has a very long history. The oldest examples are stone carvings from the 11th century BC. There is also very old pottery from between 5000 and 3000 BC. Long ago, the Wu Family Shrines used carvings to tell historical stories. In the 18th century, the word manhua was used for a type of painting. Later, an artist named Feng Zikai used the word for modern cartoons in 1925. He published his work in a magazine called Wenxue Zhoubao.

Many famous manhua appeared during important times in history. In 1928, the first major magazine called Shanghai Sketch was published. During the 1930s, about 17 different magazines were made in Shanghai. One very popular character was Sanmao, created by Zhang Leping in 1935. In Hong Kong, the character Old Master Q became very famous.

In the 1970s, many comics were about Kung Fu because of Bruce Lee. In 2011, the artist Xiao Bai won a Gold Award at the International Manga Award.

Manhua is a way to connect with modern technology. Many artists now use websites like Sina Weibo or Douban.

These sites allow artists to reach many people without needing a print publisher. This is helpful because printing can be strictly controlled. Because of smartphones, webcomics are becoming more popular with young people. Some manhua are even turned into animated shows on television. For example, Yi Ren Zhi Xia became an anime series in 2016. This shows how a simple drawing can grow into a huge story.
