Chinese architecture

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Chinese architecture is a beautiful way of building that has lasted for thousands of years. It is more than just making shelters for people to live in. This style shows how people connect with the world and their history. It has even influenced how buildings look in places like Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Many structures are built to show balance and harmony. This sense of order is important to the people who create them.

Building in this style follows very specific rules to create balance. One main rule is called bilateral symmetry. This means that if you look at a building, both sides look the same. Architects often use an even number of columns to make an odd number of bays. They also like to emphasize width rather than height. This makes the buildings feel sturdy and grounded on the earth. Many buildings also use enclosed open spaces to feel connected to the sky.

There are different ways to create these open spaces. In the north, people often build a Siheyuan. This is a courtyard where buildings surround a large, open area. These courtyards face south to catch the warm sun and block cold winds. In the south, people use a smaller space called a sky well. These are small openings in the roof that let in light and fresh air. They also help collect rainwater and let hot air escape.

The history of these buildings goes back to very early times. Between 4000 and 2000 BC, different cultures like the Hongshan and Yangshao began to grow. The Hongshan culture lived in Inner Mongolia and had special ritual centers. Later, during the Tang dynasty, Chinese building styles began to spread to nearby countries. Because wood was used so often, many old buildings did not last long. Today, we learn about them through ceramic models and old drawings.

Today, China is changing very quickly with many new buildings. Cities like Shanghai now have huge skyscrapers that reach into the clouds. Many people use high-speed rail to travel across the country very fast. Even with all these new towers, people still value traditional ways. In rural areas, workers still use old skills like carpentry and stonemasonry. Some architects even try to mix old designs with modern materials.
