They act like a tiny, perfect world. Some gardens were huge parks for emperors and royal families. These were built to show power and for pleasure. Other gardens were smaller and more private. Scholars, poets, and merchants made these to escape the busy world.

These gardens mix many arts like painting, music, and writing. They are a model of how people in China think about beauty and life. Some famous gardens are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. These include the Summer Palace and the Classical Gardens of Suzhou.

A typical garden is enclosed by walls to keep it private. Inside, you will find ponds, rock works, trees, and flowers.

There are also many halls and pavilions for resting. You can walk on winding paths or zig-zag galleries. As you move from one building to another, you see new scenes. These views unroll like a landscape painting on a scroll.

The first recorded gardens were in the Yellow River valley. They were made during the Shang dynasty between 1600 and 1046 BC. These early gardens were large parks for hunting or growing food. Long ago, people used different words for gardens. One word, "you," meant a royal garden for animals. Another word, "pu," was for a garden of plants.

Later, during the Qin dynasty, the word "yuan" was used for all gardens.

Many gardens are inspired by old legends.

One famous tale is about Mount Penglai. This was a legendary island where the Eight Immortals lived. The island had palaces of gold and silver. It was a place with no pain or winter. Many gardens create a small version of this island.

Some use a system called Yichi Sanshan. This means one pond with three mountains. This has been a main model for royal gardens for a long time.

During the Tang dynasty, gardens reached a golden age. Poets would gather in gardens to write. One famous way to do this was at the Orchid Pavilion.

Poets would place wine cups in a winding stream. If a cup stopped near a poet, they had to write a poem. This idea of a "floating cup" became very popular. Even ordinary homes had tiny gardens in their courtyards. These small spaces helped people feel close to nature every day.
