A Chinese garden is a sophisticated landscape style that has evolved over three thousand years.

These spaces serve as idealized miniature landscapes. They aim to express the harmony between humanity and the natural world. There are two main types of these gardens. Large royal gardens were built for emperors to enjoy pleasure and display power.

Smaller private gardens were created by scholars, poets, and merchants. These private spaces offered an escape from the outside world for quiet reflection. The art of the garden integrates many disciplines. It combines architecture, calligraphy, painting, sculpture, and literature.

To understand a garden, one must look at its specific design elements. A typical garden is enclosed by walls to create a private world. Inside, designers place ponds, rock works, trees, and flowers. They also build various halls and pavilions for resting.

These structures are connected by winding paths and zig-zag galleries. As a visitor moves through the space, the views change constantly. The scenery unrolls like a landscape painting on a scroll. One common feature is the Moon Gate, which is a circular entrance.

Designers also use scholar rocks, which are special stones, to add texture.

The history of these gardens began in the Yellow River valley. The earliest recorded gardens appeared during the Shang dynasty between 1600 and 1046 BC.

At that time, gardens were large enclosed parks for hunting or growing food. Ancient inscriptions on tortoise shells show different names for gardens. The term "you" referred to royal gardens for animals. The term "pu" referred to gardens for plants. By the Qin dynasty, between 221 and 206 BC, the character "yuan" was used for all gardens. The old character for "yuan" actually looked like a small picture of a garden. It showed a square for a wall, a small square for a pond, and a symbol for a plantation.

Many classical gardens are inspired by the legend of Mount Penglai.

According to ancient tales, Mount Penglai was a legendary island in the Bohai Sea. It was the home of the Eight Immortals and contained palaces of gold and silver. On this island, there was no winter or pain. This legend deeply influenced garden design. Some gardens feature a single artificial mountain to represent this island.

Others use the Yichi Sanshan system. This system consists of one pond with three mountains. This specific model became a standard for many royal gardens.

During the Han dynasty, from 206 BC to 220 AD, imperial gardens became even more complex. Emperor Wu built a large garden that combined botanical and zoological features. He created the Lake of the Supreme Essence with three artificial islands. These islands represented the legendary isles of Penglai, Fanghu, and Yingzhou. This set of three mountains became a recurring theme in royal design. Later, during the Han period, the General Liang Ji built a massive landscape garden.

His garden included artificial mountains, ravines, and forests. It was filled with rare birds and wild animals. This garden was one of the first to try to create an idealized copy of nature.

The Tang dynasty, from 618 to 907 AD, is known as the first golden age of the classical garden.

During this time, painting and poetry reached new heights. Gardens became deeply connected to literature. Scholars created "wenren yuan," or scholar's gardens. These were often inspired by classical poems. The poet Wang Wei created a garden with twenty different landscape scenes. He gave each scene a name, like the "Garden of Magnolias" or the "Waving Willows." He even wrote poems for each specific area.

Gardens also provided unique settings for social and artistic gatherings. One famous tradition involved the "floating cup" method. The calligrapher Wang Xizhi held a gathering at the Orchid Pavilion.

In this setting, poets sat beside a meandering stream. They placed wine cups in the water to float along the current. If a cup stopped beside a poet, that person had to compose a poem. This method turned the garden into a living stage for art. This tradition influenced many later gardens, including imperial ones built by the Sui dynasty. These spaces remain significant today. Several sites, like the Summer Palace and the gardens of Suzhou, are protected by UNESCO.
