He was a poet, a painter, a musician, and a high-ranking politician. Because of his deep religious devotion, he is often called the "Poet Buddha." He is considered one of the most distinguished men of arts and letters from his era. His life combined the busy world of government with the quiet beauty of nature.

Wang Wei was a master of several different creative forms. He was famous for his Shanshui poetry, which means "mountain and water" or landscape poetry. He also mastered the Jueju, a type of Chinese quatrain consisting of four lines. Many people believe his artistic talents were perfectly linked. The Song dynasty scholar Su Shi noted that Wang Wei's poems felt like paintings. He also said that when you look at his paintings, you see poetry within them.

His artistic style often focused on the natural world. His Jueju poems frequently depicted quiet scenes of mist and water. These works often featured very few people and very little detail. This simplicity is sometimes compared to the Chan Buddhist path to enlightenment. While many of his paintings are lost, his influence remains visible in later art. He was also a skilled musician who played the pipa, a stringed instrument. Although he was highly regarded, no musical notes or compositions from him have survived.

Wang Wei's professional life began with great success. He was born into an aristocratic Han family in Shanxi province. At age nineteen, he moved to the imperial capital of Chang'an. In 721, he passed the palace examination with the highest possible score. This top position is known as the Zhuangyuan. He began his career as a Deputy Master of Music. However, he was later demoted to oversee a granary in Jizhou. This happened because he broke etiquette by performing a lion dance.

His career saw many ups and downs due to politics. He rose to power through his friendship with the minister Zhang Jiuling. Later, he served as an Assistant Censor and traveled to the frontier of Liangzhou. He eventually acquired a large estate in Lantian called Wang Chuan. This estate became his sanctuary for painting and writing. He also held the high rank of shàngshū yòuchéng, or deputy prime minister. This position was located in Chang'an, near his beloved private home.

Life became very difficult during the An-Shi disorders, a major rebellion. In 756, rebels captured the capital city of Chang'an. Wang Wei was unable to flee because he was sick with dysentery. The rebels moved him to the city of Luoyang. To avoid helping the rebels, some say he pretended to be deaf. Others say he took medicine to damage his voice. In 757, the Tang government arrested him for treason. His brother, Wang Jin, helped him when the charges were eventually dropped.

In his final years, Wang Wei focused on Chan Buddhism. He became a vegetarian and studied with the master Daoguang for ten years. He used the name Mojie, which refers to the Buddhist figure Vimalakirti. This figure is known for teaching the doctrine of Śūnyatā, or emptiness. Wang Wei's religious views deeply influenced his later poetry. He spent his remaining time at his Lantian estate, connecting with nature. He died in either 759 or 761 and was buried at his estate. Today, about 370 of his 420 attributed poems remain for us to study.
