Du Fu was a monumental figure in Chinese literature during the Tang dynasty. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest poets of his era.

Along with his contemporary Li Bai, Du Fu helped define the poetic landscape of his time. Critics often bestow titles upon him such as "Poet-Historian" or "Poet-Sage." These names reflect his ability to blend artistic skill with deep moral and historical insight. His influence extended far beyond China, shaping literary traditions in Japan for centuries. Today, nearly fifteen hundred of his poems have been preserved for modern readers.

To truly interpret Du Fu's work, one must understand the connection between art and morality. Traditional Chinese literary criticism emphasizes the life of the author to explain their poems.

Scholars like Burton Watson note that Chinese thought views art and ethics as closely linked. Because Du Fu's poems often address history and moral duty, his biography is essential. Furthermore, Chinese poetry is typically concise and often omits specific context. This brevity means readers may misunderstand a poem without knowing the background. American scholar Stephen Owen suggests that Du Fu's diverse work requires studying his entire life to avoid reductive categorizations.

Du Fu's early life was defined by rigorous academic preparation. Born in 712, likely near Luoyang, he was the son of a minor scholar-official. He spent his youth studying the Confucian classics, which include philosophy, history, and poetry. This education was the standard path for those seeking a career in the civil service.

In 735, he took the Imperial examination, but he failed the test. Some historians suggest his prose style was too dense or obscure at that time. Others believe he failed to build the necessary social connections in the capital. This early failure led him to a life of travel and searching.

In 744, Du Fu met the famous poet Li Bai, a meeting that shaped his artistic development. Li Bai was already a celebrated star, while Du Fu was younger and less known.

This friendship provided Du Fu with a model of the reclusive poet-scholar life. Despite his desire to serve as a civil servant, his official career was constantly interrupted. He attempted to petition the emperor directly in 751, 754, and 755. However, his professional ambitions were largely swept away by the onset of war. He eventually married and had five children, though he faced personal loss when one son died in infancy.

The An Lushan rebellion, which began in December 755, devastated Du Fu's life and his country. This conflict lasted for almost eight years and caused massive social disruption.

A census in 754 recorded 52.9 million people in China, but by 764, the count was only 16.9 million. This massive decline was due to people being killed or displaced by the war. Du Fu lived an itinerant life, moving constantly to escape famine, war, and unrest. These hardships became the enduring themes of his poetry. He wrote about the lives of his family, neighbors, and strangers to capture the reality of the era.

During the mid-760s, Du Fu found a brief period of peace in Chengdu.

He lived in a simple thatched cottage for about five years. This period is remembered as one of the happiest and most peaceful times in his life. However, financial difficulties eventually forced him to seek help from friends. In 766, he began a slow journey down the Yangtze River with his family. His health was failing, as he suffered from poor eyesight, deafness, and various other ailments. He also struggled with lung problems and is noted as the first person in historical records identified as a diabetic.

Du Fu's final years were spent in a state of constant movement and physical decline. He stayed in Kuizhou for nearly two years, a period that resulted in a major poetic flowering. During this time, he wrote approximately 400 poems in a dense, late style.

He eventually reached Hunan province, where he died in late 770 at the age of 58. His life was characterized by a deep sense of duty to his country and his family. He is remembered as a loyal friend, a dutiful official, and a patriotic subject. His legacy remains a vital link to the history and soul of the Tang dynasty.
