His life was filled with both great success and difficult times.

Wang Wei was a master of many different kinds of art. He was famous for writing poems about nature, like mountains and streams. These are called Shanshui poems. Many people say his poems are like paintings. They also say his paintings feel like poems.

He was also a master of the Jueju, which is a short poem with four lines. He played a stringed instrument called the pipa with great skill. While we have many of his poems, his music notes were not saved.

His journey began in a wealthy family in Shanxi province.

At age nineteen, he went to the capital city of Chang'an. He wanted to take tests to work for the government. In 721, he passed these tests with the highest score. This score is called the Zhuangyuan. He started his career as a musician for the imperial court. Later, he held many important jobs, including deputy prime minister.

Life was not always easy for Wang Wei. During the An-Shi disorders, a large war broke out in China. In 756, rebels took over the capital city. Wang Wei was captured by these rebels while he was sick with dysentery. He was taken to the city of Luoyang. Later, he was even arrested and put in prison. His brother, Wang Jin, helped him get free from these charges. Eventually, Wang Wei returned to his important work in the government.

In his later years, Wang Wei found peace in religion. He became a devout Chan Buddhist and a vegetarian. He spent much of his time at his estate in Lantian. This home allowed him to be close to nature. He studied with a master named Daoguang for ten years. Even though his original paintings are lost, his influence is still seen today. We still read his many poems, like the one called "Longing," to learn about his beautiful world.
