Wuxia is a special kind of Chinese fiction.

These stories focus on the adventures of martial artists. The name comes from two words. "Wu" means martial or armed. "Xia" means a hero or someone who is chivalrous. These heroes often come from lower social classes. They do not serve kings or rich lords. Instead, they follow a code of honor. They fight to fix wrongs and help the weak. They try to stop people who are unfair.

This way of life is called the jianghu. This word literally means "rivers and lakes." It is a fictional world for people on the edges of society.

Many wuxia stories follow a similar pattern. A young hero might face a sad tragedy. They might lose people they love very much. This event starts a long journey for them. The hero must train very hard to learn martial arts. They might study with many different fighters. Eventually, they become a powerful warrior. Some heroes might even be denied entry to a school. They then train in secret to surprise others.

In some tales, the hero faces a great rival. They fight a long battle to reach a final showdown. Some stories also include magic or supernatural powers.

These stories have a very long history. Tales of the "xia" go back over 2,000 years. Early stories from 300 to 200 BC are called youxia. In the Tang dynasty, stories became prototypes for modern wuxia. These featured loners performing brave deeds. During the Ming dynasty, famous books were written. One was called Water Margin. It told the story of 108 heroes. These heroes chose to be outlaws rather than serve a bad government. This book helped create the idea of the jianghu.

Many of these old books were lost to history.

In the 20th century, wuxia became very popular again. The first wuxia film was The Burning of the Red Lotus Temple. It came out in 1928. In northern China, there were five great writers. They were known as the Five Great Masters of the Northern School. These writers included people like Huanzhulouzhu and Wang Dulu. Later, Hong Kong saw a "golden age" of wuxia. Famous writers like Louis Cha led this movement. They wrote stories for magazines and newspapers. They even added themes like mystery and romance to the tales.

Today, wuxia is part of popular culture all over the world. You can see it in many different forms. It is in Chinese opera, cartoons, and video games. It is also in television dramas and movies.

Wuxia has also influenced creators in other places. People in Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia use these ideas. For example, some Japanese manga are influenced by wuxia. This shows how much people love these tales of bravery. The stories continue to grow and change in new ways.
