Light novels are a special kind of popular literature from Japan. They are mostly written for young adults, like teens and people in their twenties. These books are often called "raito noberu" or simply "LN" for short. What makes them unique is that they include manga-style illustrations. These drawings are often in black and white. Many stories focus on romantic comedy or a genre called isekai. In an isekai story, an ordinary person travels to a fantasy world.

There are many ways these stories reach readers. Some authors first write web novels on the internet. They might use websites like Shōsetsuka ni Narō to share their work. This lets them get feedback from readers very quickly. If a web novel becomes popular, a publisher might turn it into a printed book. These printed books are often small paperbacks called bunkobon. They are sold at low prices to make them easy to buy. Some stories are even published first in monthly magazines.

People have been writing popular stories in Japan for a long time. Some believe the start of this style was the Sonorama Bunko imprint in 1975. A man named Keita Kamikita is credited with naming them in 1990. He wanted a term that did not just mean "young adult." He noticed that science fiction books were attracting fans of anime and manga. The 1990s brought the famous Slayers series to readers. Later, the Boogiepop series helped many people discover these books through anime.

The Kadokawa Corporation is a major leader in this industry. They own big labels like Dengeki Bunko and Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko. One large contest is the Dengeki Novel Prize. In 2013, that contest received over 6,500 submissions from writers.
