Even characters without powers, like Batman, can be superheroes. In the past, people called these masked heroes "mystery men." These stories can be short adventures or very long sagas. They are mostly found in comic books today. However, you can also find them in movies and other media.

Most superheroes face dangerous enemies called supervillains. These villains often have powers that match the hero's strength. This makes them a daunting challenge to defeat. Some villains are very smart and use complex schemes. They might use fancy machines or have many resources.

Many villains act like real-world bad leaders or criminals. They might even want to rule the whole world. Sometimes, a hero and a villain are very similar. The main difference is how they use their abilities. A hero uses power to help, while a villain is selfish.

To stay safe, many heroes use a secret identity. This is often called an alter ego. They use a different name to hide from enemies. This keeps their friends and family from getting hurt. It also lets them live a normal life sometimes.

Supervillains use secret identities for different reasons. They hide their real names to commit crimes without being caught. This allows them to act illegally without fear of the law. Keeping these secrets can be a very hard job for heroes. It creates a lot of drama in their stories.

Superhero stories have a very long history. The word "superhero" has been used since at least 1917. A famous example is Superman, who debuted in 1938. Long ago, people told stories about heroes with great strength. These included figures like Hercules or Odysseus from old myths.

Some heroes were inspired by masked people in the American Old West. Others came from urban legends like Spring Heeled Jack. Writers have used many styles like mystery or horror. This helps the heroes fit into many different worlds.

These stories often happen in a shared universe. This means many different heroes live in the same world. Sometimes, characters from different books meet in a "crossover." This can be a big, public event in comic books.

Even when characters die, they often come back to life. Fans sometimes call this "comic book death." This happens through magic or changes to the story facts. These stories help us think about big ideas. They can show how people treat those who are different.
