They often wear colorful costumes to hide who they really are. These characters use their amazing skills to fight crime and protect the public. Many want to make the world a much better place. Some heroes fight daily crime while also stopping huge threats from supervillains. These villains are the criminal opposites of the heroes. Often, one villain becomes a hero's special archenemy or nemesis.

There are many ways a character can get their powers. Some heroes, like Superman or Spider-Man, have non-human biology. Other heroes, like Batman or Iron Man, use advanced technology they made. Some use magical powers or special objects to help them. For example, Green Lantern uses a powerful object for his abilities. Characters like Doctor Strange use magic to achieve their strength. Even some heroes have parts that are not quite human. The cyborg Nyctalope had a mechanical heart and special night vision.

These stories come from very old ideas and legends. Long ago, people told stories about heroes like Hercules and Odysseus. These mythological figures had extraordinary abilities that inspired modern superpowers. Some ideas also came from English folklore, like Robin Hood. A character named Spring-Heeled Jack even inspired the look of many masked heroes. In the American Old West, some people used masks to hide their identities. This type of masked fighting helped inspire the characters we see in books today.

Batman was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger in 1939. Many important female heroes also appeared during this time. Wonder Woman debuted in 1941 and was inspired by Greek myths. Today, we see superheroes in many different places. You can find them in American comic books and Hollywood films. They also appear in television shows and video games. In Japan, they are part of manga and anime. Some heroes even started in kamishibai, which uses pictures and live storytelling. Even cartoons use these ideas, like Bugs Bunny using super-carrots. Superheroes help us imagine what it is like to be incredibly brave.
