They are often called archetypes in stories. An archetype is a classic type of character. These characters act as a big challenge for heroes. Some use superpowers or magic to fight. Others use alien strength or mystical abilities. Many villains use their genius brains instead. They create complex schemes to reach their goals. Their aim is often to rule the whole world. This makes them very dangerous for any hero.

How does a supervillain work in a story? They often serve as a foil for the hero. A foil is a character that shows how different the hero is. Some villains have huge amounts of money or resources. They use these things to help their bad plans. Many villains act like real-world bad leaders. They might seem like gangsters or mad scientists. Some act like warlords or corrupt businesspeople. They can even act like terrorists or serial killers. These traits make them feel very real and scary.

These types of characters have a long history. One of the earliest was John Devil from 1862. He was created by the writer Paul Féval, père. In 1863, Féval also made Colonel Bozzo-Corona. This character led a group called Les Habits Noirs. Later, Léon Sazie created Zigomar in 1909. Zigomar was a masked thief in Paris. He wore a red hood and led the Gang of Z. He was so popular that Victorin Jasset made three films about him. These films came out between 1911 and 1913.

Many famous names come from different places and times. In 1911, Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre created Fantômas. He was a master of disguise in France. Another famous name is Fu Manchu from 1913. He was a mad scientist created by Sax Rohmer. In modern comics, we see many famous names. Male villains include the Joker, Lex Luthor, and Thanos. Female villains include Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy. Some villains even join groups. Examples are the Sinister Six and the Legion of Doom.

Supervillains often connect to other famous stories you know. The character Judex was an honest hero from France. He likely inspired the American character The Shadow. The Shadow then inspired the famous Batman. Some villains also have sad stories. Mr. Freeze is a good example from Batman. He is not just a bad person. He wants to save his wife from a virus. He keeps her safe in a cold cryochamber. This makes his story feel very different from others.
