A villain is a character in a story who does bad things. They are often called a bad guy, a baddy, or even a "black hat."

These characters serve a very important job in a plot. They act as the opposite of the hero. While a hero is brave and seeks justice, a villain is often selfish or cruel. Their bad actions help the story move along by creating problems.

Without a villain, the hero might not have a reason to be brave.

In many stories, a villain acts as an obstacle. The hero must struggle to overcome them to succeed. A villain can also be a "foil" to the hero. This means they show how different the two characters are. By being mean or cunning, they make the hero's kindness stand out. Some villains are very simple, but others are more complex. The writer William Shakespeare made some villains feel sympathetic. However, he also wrote characters like Iago who had no good traits at all.

History shows us that the word "villain" has changed over time. It comes from the Late Latin word "villanus." Long ago, this word described people who worked on a large estate called a villa.

Later, the word was used to describe people with low social status. People began to think that having low manners meant having bad morals. Eventually, the word shifted from describing a person's rank to describing their wicked actions.

Fairy tales use villains in very specific ways. A researcher named Vladimir Propp found that many tales use the same types of villains. One type is a "false hero" who pretends to be good. The Ugly Sisters in Cinderella are a famous example of this. Another type is a "dispatcher" who sends the hero on a journey. Sometimes, a villain might even act like a helper by leading a hero toward a goal.

Even if a villain is defeated, their family or followers might seek revenge later.

We see many famous villains in movies and cartoons. Walt Disney created Pete, who became the first Disney villain.

In the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the Evil Queen is the main antagonist. Animated shows like Adventure Time also use more complex villains for older audiences. In early films, villains were often bandits or even monsters like the Martians in The War of the Worlds. From the Wicked Witch of the West to James Bond's enemies, villains keep us watching.
