People have wondered about good and evil for a very long time. These ideas help us understand right from wrong. In many traditions, these two concepts are seen as opposites. This is often called dualism. In these views, good is a force that should win. Evil is seen as a force that must be defeated.

Philosophers study these big questions in a field called ethics. Ethics has three main branches. Normative ethics looks at how we ought to behave. Applied ethics looks at specific moral issues. Metaethics asks about the very nature of morality itself.

History shows us many different ways people have viewed these forces. In ancient Iran, a thinker named Zoroaster spoke of two opposing powers. One was Ahura Mazda, which means Illuminating Wisdom. The other was Angra Mainyu, a destructive spirit. In ancient Egypt, people believed in Ma'at, which stood for justice and order. They also knew of Isfet, which meant chaos and decay.

Ancient Mesopotamian religion also showed a conflict between Marduk and Tiamat. These stories helped people make sense of the world around them.

As time passed, ideas about morality became more complex. In the classical world, Greek thinkers like Plato explored these concepts. They moved from seeing good and evil as habits to seeing them as absolute truths. During the medieval period, Christian theologians had many different definitions. Some saw sin as a desire that went against God's law. Others saw it as a way to follow or break religious rules.

These ideas could be about personal choices or about following the laws of a country. They even linked morality to how a group of people survives.

Different religions offer unique ways to explain these concepts today. The Baháʼí Faith teaches that evil does not actually exist. They believe evil is just a lack of good. It is similar to how darkness is just a lack of light.

In Christianity, many ideas come from the Bible. Some thinkers, like Thomas Aquinas, said evil is the absence of good. In Mormonism, life is seen as a test of faith. People use their agency, or their power to choose, to decide their path. These beliefs help followers navigate their lives and their relationship with the divine.

Modern thinkers also look at good and evil through science and psychology. Some people believe goodness comes from natural love and bonding. Others think it comes from knowing the truth.

The psychologist Carl Jung suggested that people often see evil as something outside themselves. He believed people project their own "shadow" onto others. Philip Zimbardo suggested that people might act in bad ways because of a group identity. This idea came from his work with the Stanford prison experiment. Whether through religion or science, the study of these ideas continues to grow.
