Orchestration

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Orchestration is the art of choosing which instruments play specific musical parts. It is also called instrumentation. A person doing this work decides how to assign melodies or basslines to different players. They might take a piece written for a solo piano and adapt it for a full orchestra. This process helps a single idea grow into a huge, rich sound. Orchestrators can work with a symphony orchestra or even a small concert band. This skill makes music feel much more alive and colorful for the listener.

How does an orchestrator actually work? They must decide which instruments will play certain notes or chords. Some instruments, like trumpets, can only play one note at a time. Others, like the piano or harp, can play many notes at once. An orchestrator might give a bright chord to the trumpets and trombones. Or, they might choose cellos and bassoons to make a dark, heavy sound. They can also double a melody by having two different instruments play it together. For example, a flute melody might be paired with a glockenspiel to add a sparkling chime.

In the past, most composers wrote their own orchestration. This changed slowly over a long time in music history. Today, many classical composers still do this work themselves. However, there are famous exceptions to this rule. Maurice Ravel orchestrated a piano work by Mussorgsky called Pictures at an Exhibition. Malcolm Arnold also orchestrated a piece for strings by William Walton. These examples show how an expert can bring a new life to an existing song.

Many people now do orchestration as a professional job. Orchestrators often work in film music, musical theatre, or recording studios. In musical theatre, a composer might write a simple score for piano and voice. Then, they hire an orchestrator to create the full score for the pit orchestra. Jazz big bands use this too. A songwriter might write a lead sheet with just a melody and chords. An arranger then "fleshes out" the music for saxophones, trumpets, and drums.

Learning this craft requires a lot of study and training. Many professional orchestrators earn college degrees like a Bachelor or Master of Music. Some even hold a Doctorate to teach at universities or conservatories. In the modern world, orchestrators have even more tools than before. They can use electronic instruments like the synthesizer or the Theremin. These new sounds allow them to create futuristic or unusual musical colors. This blend of old and new keeps the art of orchestration growing.
