Orchestration

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Orchestration is the art of choosing instruments for music.

A composer writes a melody or a tune. An orchestrator then decides who plays it. They might give the tune to the violins. They could also give it to the trumpets.

This choice changes how the music feels. High trumpets can sound very bright and loud. Low cellos can sound heavy and dark. Orchestrators can even mix sounds. They might have a flute play with a glockenspiel. This adds a sparkling, chime-like color to the music.

Many people do this as a job. Orchestrators work on films and in musical theatre. They help tell a story through sound. Some people study for many years to learn this skill. They may earn a college degree in music.

In the past, composers often did this work themselves. Today, many use experts to help them. This is common in jazz big bands too. They use orchestrators to fill out the music for saxophones and drums. Modern music even uses new tools like synthesizers. This gives them even more colors to use.
