Arrangement

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Music can take many forms. An arrangement is a way to change an existing song. An arranger can add new instruments to a piece. They might add a new ending or change the melody. This gives the music variety.

Famous composers have used this art for a long time. J.S. Bach once took a piece for one violin. He turned it into a large work for an orchestra. He even changed the notes so wind instruments could play it.

Piano music is often arranged too. Erik Satie wrote songs for the piano. Later, Claude Debussy arranged them for a full orchestra.

Maurice Ravel also made a famous arrangement of a piece by Modest Mussorgsky. Ravel used a special instrument called a celesta to make new sounds.

In jazz, some musicians use head arrangements. These are songs they learn by memory. They do not write them down on paper.

In pop music, arrangers add brass or strings to songs. This helps make a song sound new and exciting.
