Arrangement

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An arrangement is a way to change an existing piece of music. It is a musical adaptation that gives a melody new variety. An arranger does more than just pick which instruments play the notes. That task is called orchestration. An arranger uses special techniques to add new parts. They might create new themes for introductions or transitions. They can also change the endings or the harmony. This art allows a single song to feel fresh and different.

There are many ways to work on an arrangement. A composer might change the key of a song. For example, J.S. Bach changed a violin piece from E major to D. He did this to help wind instruments play the notes better. In jazz, musicians sometimes use head arrangements. These are unwritten versions that players memorize in their heads. In pop music, arrangers might change the tempo or the meter. They can even add a full orchestra to a simple song.

People have been arranging music for a very long time. In the 1700s, J.S. Bach made arrangements of his own work. He turned a solo violin piece into a large orchestral Sinfonia. During the 1800s, many piano pieces were rewritten for bands. Erik Satie wrote his Gymnopédies for solo piano in 1888. Eight years later, Claude Debussy arranged them for an orchestra. This helped put Satie on the map.

Many famous artists have left their mark through arrangements. Maurice Ravel arranged a suite by Modest Mussorgsky. Ravel used a celesta to create unexpected sounds. Hector Berlioz arranged a song by Franz Schubert called "Erlkönig." Berlioz used woodwinds and horns to add color. Franz Liszt also arranged this same song for a different sound. Gustav Mahler used a harp to replace piano notes in his own work.

Arrangements help connect different styles of music. In the 1920s, Don Redman changed how jazz big bands sounded. He introduced more complex melodies for Fletcher Henderson's orchestra. Later, Billy Strayhorn became a famous arranger for Duke Ellington. Today, we hear arrangements in many places. Pop stars use brass or string sections to add excitement. Even dance music uses remixes, which are a type of arrangement.
