Many stories around the world follow a similar pattern.

This pattern is often called the hero's journey or the monomyth. It describes a hero who goes on a big adventure. This hero must face a major crisis and win. After the victory, the hero returns home. They are often changed or transformed by what they did. This idea helps us see how stories connect across different cultures.

The journey can be broken into three main parts. The first part is called the departure. In this stage, the hero leaves their ordinary life. They receive a call to start an adventure. Sometimes the hero feels afraid and refuses the call. A mentor or a magical helper might arrive to help them. This helper often gives the hero special tools or artifacts.

The second part is called the initiation. This is when the hero enters a special, unknown world. They must cross a threshold to get there. In this new place, the hero faces many trials or tasks. They might work alone or with the help of others. Eventually, the hero reaches a central crisis or a deep cave. They must face a great ordeal to win a reward or treasure.

The third part is the return. The hero must travel back to their ordinary world. They might be chased by guardians from the special world. Some heroes are reluctant to leave their new home. Once they return, they bring back a prize or an elixir. This prize can be used to help other people. The hero also gains new wisdom or spiritual power.

Joseph Campbell popularized these ideas in his 1949 book. He titled it "The Hero with a Thousand Faces." He used the monomyth to compare different religions. Campbell described 17 different stages for the journey. Other thinkers studied these patterns much earlier. Edward Burnett Tylor studied them in 1871. Johann Georg von Hahn also wrote about these patterns in 1876. Even today, scholars continue to study these story structures.
